Narkomtyazhprom

The Narkomtyazhprom building was a proposed headquarters for the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry in the USSR. It was planned to be constructed on Red Square, replacing the Upper Trading Rows, where the GUM building now stands. Two major design competitions were held for the project in 1934 and 1936, attracting some of the most prominent Soviet architects of the era, including Alexander and Viktor Vesnin, Ivan Leonidov, Ivan Fomin, Alexey Shchusev, Daniil Fridman, Boris Iofan, Karo Alabyan, Konstantin Melnikov, Arkady Mordvinov, and many others.

Despite the ambitious plans, the building was never constructed. The project was canceled in 1937 following the death of Grigory Konstantinovich Ordzhonikidze, the head of the Commissariat. The design attributed to this project was based on the work of architect Ivan Aleksandrovich Fomin.
